Louis ALTHUSSER: On the Materialist Understanding of the Political. A Lecture by Sergey Rebrov
105 years ago, on October 16, 1918, Louis Althusser, a French neo-Marxist philosopher and one of the most influential figures of Western Marxism, the founder of structuralist Marxism, a member of the French Communist Party (1948–1980), and a professor at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris, was born.
What is the relationship between materialism and political theory? Why wasn't the old dialectical materialism truly materialistic? How is a materialist view of politics possible in the modern world, and how can Machiavelli help? All these questions posed a serious challenge to the philosophical thought of Louis Althusser in his time, whose teachings still occupy a far from typical position in the context of the development of new materialist ontologies, whose theorists often simply avoid discussing political issues. In particular, both Graham Harman and Bruno Latour attempt to expand or redefine the boundaries of the political in every possible way, which, however, actually leads to the loss of its key elements within the rigid necessity of the equality of objects (or actors in a single network) among themselves.
How, then, was Althusser able to substantiate his own version of a new political theory, freed from both the economic-centric illusions of classical Marxism and the shortcomings of modern anti-anthropological materialism? These complex issues are addressed by Sergei Rebrov, a political scientist and postgraduate student in the Department of Theory and Philosophy of Politics at St. Petersburg State University.
