Microsoft Excel Tutorial: AVERAGE Function in Excel - Finding the Mean of a Set of Numbers | MrExcel Podcast.
Welcome to another episode of the MrExcel podcast. In this episode, we will be discussing the sixth most popular Excel function - AVERAGE. I'm Bill Jelen and in this series, we will be exploring the most commonly used functions in Excel, but not necessarily in order. So let's dive into AVERAGE, which is a great tool for finding the mean or arithmetic average of a set of numbers.
If you're looking for a quick way to get the average of a set of numbers, simply select the cells and it will appear in the status bar at the bottom of your screen. In Excel 2003, you will only see the sum, but in Excel 2007 or 2010, you can right-click and choose from six different statistics, including average. However, if you want to use the AVERAGE function, simply type =AVERAGE( and specify the range of cells. But did you know that you can also use the autosum button to quickly find the average? Just click on the drop-down arrow next to the autosum button and select average from the list.
One thing to keep in mind when using the AVERAGE function is that it only works with numeric values. So if you have any non-numeric values, such as true or false, they will be excluded from the calculation. This can sometimes lead to unexpected results, such as a division by zero error. However, you can also use the AVERAGE function to find the average of a series of dates. Simply format the cells as dates and you will see the average date displayed.
Another handy shortcut for using the AVERAGE function is to use the Alt + = shortcut, which will automatically insert the SUM function above the cell you are in. You can then simply change the SUM to AVERAGE and you will have the average of the same range of cells. And if you want to quickly copy the same formula to a cell below, use the control + ' shortcut, also known as control ditto. This will copy the exact same formula from the cell above, making it easy to find the average of multiple sets of data.
