XML shares a lot in common with HTML. While HTML was originally based on something called SGML or 'Standard Generalized Markup Language' and XML came later, HTML was too limiting at that time and XML gained a kind of base language status going forward.
Going forward there was even an effort to make HTML conform to more rule based XML language called XHTML but it never really took off. Still we believe before starting to learn HTML, one should understand the basic syntax of XML as would provide a more solid foundation for learning HTML.
