Recent excavations in Kazakhstan have revealed some truly astonishing monuments. Most of the burials share similar elements. In some cases, if a person passed away in the spring, their body was embalmed. A farewell was then offered to the deceased, according to their status. At the same time, a burial mound, the final resting place, was prepared. The mound is a symbol of another world, but its outline represents the nomad's home. In other words, the nomad moved to a new home, a new living space, after passing into another world.
The animal figurines found in these mounds are often executed in the same bizarre form. Tigers, deer, and mythical animals are depicted curled up. They seem to be curled into a circle, symbolizing the final outcome and ultimate purpose of life. With their bodies turned in the opposite direction, the animals seemed to depart beyond this circle into another life, only to return to this circle of life. Thus, all these iconic elements of Saka art have survived the centuries and are still used today. These cultural qualities have survived to this day in the art and culture of the Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, Tuvans, and other Turkic peoples. Kamilla Vitalievna Li, a member of the UNESCO Association of Art Critics, art historian, and cultural scholar, talks about this amazing connection between times.
