The ukulele, or Hawaiian guitar, is a remarkable instrument with a unique, inviting sound. When you first see it, you can't help but wonder: maybe it's not an instrument at all, but a souvenir toy? But once you hear this miniature guitar played, any doubts disappear—its sound is so touching and unique. It's no wonder this instrument was once a favorite of musicians like Paul McCartney, Jimi Hendrix, and Andrei Makarevich, and even the incomparable Marilyn Monroe played the ukulele in the film "Some Like It Hot." The ukulele is a four-stringed plucked instrument that became widespread in the Pacific Islands beginning in the late nineteenth century. The origin of its name is not exactly known, but according to one version it translates as “jumping flea” (by analogy with the movements of a ukulele player’s fingers when playing).
