Observation: A dominant male Nile Crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) processing and consuming an Impala carcass in the Sabie River.
Behavioral Analysis: This footage documents the unique feeding physiology of an aquatic apex predator.
Inertial Feeding: Because crocodiles cannot chew (they lack the lateral jaw movement of mammals), they rely on Inertial Feeding. You will observe the crocodile violently tossing its head back to use momentum to slide the meat down its esophagus.
Hyper-Acidic Digestion: Crocodiles possess the most acidic stomach of any vertebrate. This allows them to digest bones, hooves, and horns—extracting every ounce of calcium and nutrients from the prey.
The Palatal Valve: Notice how the crocodile can hold the prey underwater without drowning. A specialized flap of skin called the Palatal Valve seals the throat, allowing them to open their mouth underwater while keeping their airway dry.
