In the 10th century the Papacy was corrupt and powerless, it looked like they’d hit rock bottom but by God they kept digging! This was in fact just the beginning of an era known as the pornocracy, in which one Italian family held power over like half a dozen popes who were all said to be gambling with pagan gods and drinking toasts to Satan. In particular, a woman named Marozia, the world’s first and foremost pornocrat, was both the mother of a pope, the lover of a pope, the grandmother of two more popes, the great-grandmother of two more popes, and the great-great-grandmother of another pope. That’s a hundred and fifty years of Popes! In reality all our information of this era comes from one dude with a chip on his shoulder and it was more about political struggles with the Germans and the Byzantines, but come on with a name like the pornocracy how can you ignore it
