I find comfort in structure and tradition, and I find serenity in being present with my higher power. I enjoyed both on this Fourth of July.
Although content with the morning and afternoon activities, I had the energy and the desire to hike 2 1/2 miles up Echo Mountain to watch the Los Angeles fireworks from above. Those who were going with me canceled, but I still wanted to make the trek. I knew the trail would be festive that I could spend the time meditating with God.
The young man behind me overheard me recording my video and when I finished said, "Amen brother!" He also set off on the trail determined to enjoy himself after others declined to join him. We started a conversation that lasted the entire evening.
Keep your structure. Value your traditions. Keep a close walk with your higher power. And always be quick to reframe a negative into a positive. You never know when you might make a new friend.
