A bal-chatri is a *low-profile, cage-style trap* designed to safely capture birds of prey like red-tailed hawks. Inside the wire cage is live bait (commonly a mouse or small bird), which attracts the raptor’s attention from above.
Here’s where the design matters: the top and sides of the trap are covered with **small monofilament nooses**. When the hawk strikes at the bait, its talons come into contact with those loops. The loops tighten around the toes — not harming the bird, but preventing it from flying away.
The key to this trap is **timing and supervision**. This is not a set-it-and-leave-it device. Falconers and trained wildlife professionals stay nearby, ready to respond immediately once the bird is caught. Quick response reduces stress and ensures the bird is handled safely.
Used correctly, the bal-chatri is one of the most effective and humane tools for capturing raptors for rescue, relocation, or falconry.
