The beginning of the 17th century. The Russian state is in the throes of the Time of Troubles.
Crime is rampant, famine and disease are ravaging the country. The neighboring Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth has long been nurturing plans to expand its territory at the expense of the Russian state and decides to take advantage of this situation.
Representatives of the Polish nobility discover an impostor who declares himself to be
Tsarevich Dmitry, the youngest son of the Russian Tsar Ivan the Terrible and
his seventh wife, Maria Nagaya. Thus appears False Dmitry I, who eventually reaches Moscow and is officially crowned tsar. But
further events begin to unfold in a manner unsuitable for the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and
the plans of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth are thrown into disarray...
After watching this episode, you will learn: how did the Russian people expose
False Dmitry I? Why did they believe other impostors? Who allowed the Poles into
Moscow, and what horrors did the city's residents endure? And how did the Russian Tsardom find itself on the brink of extinction, and who prevented this disaster?
This and much more is covered in this episode of the "Russian History" project.
