In this video, we illustrate how bucket brigade picking can be used to optimize productivity and throughput in a traditional, manual pick module.
🔹 High Velocity Pick Modules
Many distribution centers (DCs) install high-velocity pick modules for their fastest-moving products. These products are densely packed in flow racks with a conveyor running in front, allowing pickers to slide totes or cartons along as they pick items from the shelves.
🔹 Traditional vs. Zone Picking
Traditionally, workers pick all items in an order from start to finish, pushing the tote to the end of the module and then walking back to start the next order. In high-volume operations, this can lead to congestion as multiple pickers work in the same module.
An alternative is zone picking, where each worker is assigned to a specific zone and passes the tote to the next worker. While this reduces congestion, it can result in uneven work distribution, with some workers waiting for work while others are overloaded.
🔹 Bucket Brigade Picking Solution
Bucket brigade picking solves the problems of congestion and uneven work distribution. In this method:
The last worker completes the final pick and pushes the tote off the line.
The last worker then walks up the line to take over the previous worker's order.
This process continues up the line, ensuring that every worker is always busy and no two workers are picking in the same bay simultaneously.
Bucket brigades create a self-regulating flow of orders, distributing pickers where there is work. To further boost productivity, workers can pick multiple orders simultaneously in a ""train"" of multiple totes or cartons.
