In this urban exploration, I document the abandoned Padarsko Shortwave Radio Center near Plovdiv, Bulgaria - once the most powerful broadcasting facility in the Balkans. Built in the 1970s through Bulgarian-Soviet collaboration, this Cold War relic originally housed massive 500 kW transmitters and a unique rotating antenna system capable of worldwide broadcasts. While the station officially transmitted Radio Bulgaria's international programs in 10 languages, evidence suggests it may have also been used for jamming foreign radio signals during the Communist era. The facility reached its peak in the 1980s, with a total output exceeding 1,750 kW before being decommissioned in 2012. Today, while the giant transmitters are gone, and the antenna fields have been dismantled, the decaying infrastructure remains - including control rooms, technical buildings, and the concrete foundations of what was once a cutting-edge broadcasting complex. Join me as I investigate this forgotten piece of Cold War history and explore what remains of Bulgaria's shortwave radio empire. Like and subscribe for more explorations of abandoned historical sites!
