Speaking to you directly from the Assembly floor moments after Governor Newsom's State of the State address. Here's what I heard and what it means for our communities.
As your representative in the California State Legislature, I wanted to share my immediate reactions to Governor Newsom's final State of the State address before we see his full budget proposal tomorrow. Standing here in the Assembly chamber, a few key priorities really stood out that will directly impact families across #AD80 and all of California.
Education funding** remains a top concern. The Governor emphasized continuing investment in our schools, UC system, and CSU system. As someone who was the first in my family to attend college at San Diego State, I know how critical accessible higher education is for working families. We've seen devastating cuts to our university systems in the past – I'm hoping that's not the case this year when we review the budget details.
One issue that really resonated with me as a father and baseball coach is the mental health crisis facing young men**. We're seeing suicide rates among young men skyrocket disproportionately, and college admission numbers for young men falling behind. This is deeply concerning. I'm planning to host an event in San Diego specifically to address this challenge because our sons – including my own Javier – deserve our attention and support.
Social media restrictions** – this is something I've been fighting for as a parent. You may remember I coauthored legislation last year to eliminate cell phone use in schools because we know it contributes to isolation and anxiety among young people. Governor Newsom hinted today at potential new restrictions similar to what we've seen in Australia. I'm eager to see specific proposals that protect our kids from the harmful effects of unchecked social media access.
The Governor also addressed homelessness, where we're finally seeing slight decreases in rates – a positive sign. But there's more work ahead, and counties need to be held accountable for the resources we've provided them.
Finally, he spoke about our ongoing battles with the federal government. California has filed 52 lawsuits defending our state's interests. President Trump has attempted to withhold over $160 billion from California and is now threatening to cut childcare funding for our families. We anticipated this fight – that's why I voted to increase our legal defense budget last year. We will be relentless in protecting California's families.
These are just my initial reactions. Tomorrow when the full budget is released, we'll have more details to share. But I'm committed to keeping you informed every step of the way as we fight for education, mental health resources, protection for our children, and California's interests.
