The mind can get a distorted sense of pleasure out of suffering by identifying with mental narratives which create a sense of self. The conceptual self's identity is based on the story of 'me and my suffering', so to give up the story would equate to the dissolution of 'me'. In Truth, what would die if identification with the story was given up, is simply the illusory idea of 'me'. The essence of who you are can never die. This is pure, eternal consciousness.
