Sketching parabolas using the quadratic formula | Year 10 Parabolas
As we continue to juggle face-to-face and online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, I will continue to record my lessons here on YouTube.
My Year 10 class are this semester preparing to progress to Mathematical Methods (Unit 1 and 2) next year. We will commence the semester with the study of Parabolas or Quadratic Graphs, which follows nicely from our Quadratic Equations topic covered at the end of Semester 1.
In this video, we will look at sketching quadratic graphs by first calculating the x-intercepts using the quadratic formula. We also learn how the x = -b/(2a) component of the quadratic formula is particularly useful when graphing parabolas.
The class uses the Cambridge Essential Mathematics for the Victorian Curriculum (2nd edition) textbook for Year 10 & 10A. The students also utilise a TI Nspire CAS CX II calculator.
