What is 3d tracking good for?
Tracking converts movements in video to digital information. Thanks to this, you can place 3D elements on the video, even if the camera is moving all the time. Currently, you can hardly find a “great movie” without using computer graphics.

How does 3d tracking work?
Based on the color and brightness, the computer tries to track the specified points on the video by comparing them with the previous camera tracking to determine their current location. As you can see in the image below, the marker is set on a small piece lying on the street that is being tracked as the camera moves. The computer needs a group of pixels that remain almost unchanged throughout the duration of the video. If this group of pixels changes significantly, for example, it closes with another camera tracking over time, the computer will no longer be able to track it.

3D Tracking and Matchmoving

The second type of tracking is 3D tracking. We will consider it as part of a camera tracking called Matchmoving. First you need to lift the veil of secrecy over what is Matchmoving?

Matchmoving (from eng. Matchmoving - repetition of motion) is a complex process that allows you to create a three-dimensional scene with a digital camera, which repeats the camera tracking of a real shooting camera, using an existing video sequence. Without this camera tracking it is very difficult to imagine modern cinema and advertising, which are saturated with computer graphics and visual effects.

In this process, 3D-tracking is assigned the role of a stage in which movements of specific points are monitored using the available video sequence. As a rule, their camera tracking significantly exceeds tens and it is several times larger than the number of points required for normal tracking. As a result of this step, a set of 3d trajectories of motion of pixels corresponding to the movement of objects in the frame is obtained. You need to track (track) objects that in the camera tracking(in life) were still - decorations, static props, etc.

The next stage in Matchmoving is the Setup - the process of establishing the logical camera tracking between the tracked (punctured) points. For example, some points lie on one straight line or on one plane. As a result of this step, the program will be able to establish a correspondence between a point (pixel) in a flat video story and a point in a virtual (three-dimensional) space.

And the final stage - Solving and final tuning (Solving & Fine-Tuning). At this stage, the camera tracking performs calculations and sets an approximate location for points from the previous step. Based on the location of points in space, the trajectory of the movement of the camera itself is calculated. During the setup process, the user enters additional camera tracking that helps the program to determine not only the trajectory of the camera, but also the orientation and scale of this 3d trajectory in space. The camera tracking does not know whether the camera drove 5 meters or 2 kilometers, or whether it moved up or horizontally. By “attaching” tracked points to specific positions in space, the user uniquely sets the scale and orientation of the camera. Parts 2 and 3 are usually repeated until the result is satisfactory with camera tracking.
