He was born on November 1, 1661, in the Château de Fontainebleau—and from the first day of his life, he was doomed to wait. Louis the Great Dauphin, the only legitimate son of Louis XIV, spent 49 years as heir to the French throne—longer than any other Dauphin in French history. He participated in the sieges of Luxembourg and Philippsburg, collected paintings by Flemish masters, loved hunting more than state councils, and it was through his blood that his son Philip V became King of Spain, founding the dynasty that rules there to this day.
