How to convert a JPG or PNG image to vector art in Adobe® Illustrator® using Image Trace
There are a couple methods to convert a raster JPG or PNG image to vector art.
Option 1:
1. Place your original raster graphic onto its own layer
2. Duplicate the raster graphic layer using the Duplicate layer option in the Layers panel
3. Select Top Menu Object, Image Trace, Make and Expand (the Make and Expand option will allow you to adjust the path)
4. Delete the underlying raster graphic from the duplicate layer (this preserves your original raster layer as reference)
Option 2:
1. Make sure your raster image layer is turned on (double-clicking the layer allows you to adjust the opacity while working)
2. Create a new layer (on top of the raster layer) for the new art you will create
3. Using the Pen tool (Key Command P on Mac), click and drag around the image to create a smooth line
4. Other tools used in this tutorial include the Ellipse tool (L on Mac) and Reflect tool (O on Mac)
5. Make any adjustments using the Direct Selection Tool (A on Mac)
6. You can also “knock out” areas of an image using the Minus Front icon in the Pathfinder panel
7. Delete or turn off your underlying raster layer
8. Save as an illustrator file
Note: the manual trace option took about 4 minutes
Best practice tip: lock the raster layer to avoid any shift in the art while working.
