Exploring Japan's Scariest Hotels
In this video we are exploring Japan's eeriest abandoned hotels - which are absolutely huge.
As we arrived, a cluster of large buildings appear out of nowhere, perched on the banks of a river fed by the purist of spring water.
A labyrinth of seemingly inter-connected structures linked by a maze of twisting corridors.
The hotels have a long history, constructed between 1942 and 1980, these onsen hotels known in Japan as "Ryokans" offer public and private spring fed baths known for their therapeutic and relaxing qualities.
Back in its hey-day these hotels were the crown jewel of the area, offering stunning views, amazing cuisine and state of the art entertainment such as laser disc karaoke.
All closed between 1999 and 2008 with the lasting effects from Japan's bubble economy collapse and hundreds of millions of dollars in debt.
There are currently no plans for the hotels. Since their closures, the owners have seemingly disappeared and high demolition costs have been cited as the main reasons for them to be left to decay.
This is part one of a series of us exploring the ruins of this once famous town and its hotels that have been left to decay along its river banks.
