#BubblinBrownSugar - “It’s more than a dance competition,” Founder of One Hundred Black Parents and organizer of Bubblin Brown Sugar Chukundi Salisbury said. “It brings people back to a time when we had the CD the way that it was, and it also brings new people here.”
On Saturday, Bubblin Brown Sugar brought the energy to the gym at Garfield High School featuring some of the top performers of all ages in the area. The decades-old annual event has become one of the premiere celebrations of Black culture and community in Seattle, and this year was no different.
“It’s full of energy,” Morgan State University student Akilaah Thornton said. “It’s like a big family cookout .”
It was a memorable evening which featured incredible performances from groups of all styles, showcasing art and culture while providing a space for individuals to come together and celebrate their connections. Our Pop Culture Queen Besa Gordon was there as a judge, and our Art Queen and Garfield alum Takiyah Ward was present as well. Ward spoke highly of the performances she witnessed.
“I graduated here almost 20 years ago, and this is a great opportunity to come back,” Ward said “Don’t sleep on Seattle - there’s a lot of talent here.”
