Google IO Updates 2023
Google Pixel 7a and Google Pixel Fold have received the majority of the attention at Google I/O, but the firm also unveiled a number of upgrades for the smart home. At the conference the year before, Google gave a sneak peek of its ambitions to embrace Matter, the smart home interoperability standard the firm sought to create. This year, Google is adding Matter support to Google Home and will soon make Matter available to iPhone users as well. In addition, Google unveiled a new mobile app and a Pixel-only home panel.
Users of Google Home will initially note that the Android app has undergone a complete revamp and now has a five-tab interface. The app will launch with a Favorites tab where you can select which devices, actions, and automations to display. The Favorites tab will also include Spaces, which are collections of certain device kinds like cameras, lights, and thermostats. Your selected selection of devices, actions, and automations will show up alongside your ability to browse your Spaces in a gallery-style section at the top of the Favorite's page. A live feed of the video can be seen in the Favorites tab if one of your favorites has a camera.
Devices, Automations, Activity, and Settings make up the remaining four tabs. While the Activity tab presents a history of your device and camera activity in chronological order, the Device and Automations tab lists all the devices and automations in your home. All of your Google house settings, including those for your house and rooms, devices, and connected services, can be found under the Settings tab. Another new feature is an inbox where communications regarding potential device problems or subscription changes will be stored. Public Preview testers have already utilized this new app format, although it won't be available globally until August.
Google provided an update on its support for Matter, saying that it will now offer enhanced controllers for more than 60 different device types that are approved for use with either Matter or Google Home. More significantly, Google is integrating Matter support into its iOS app in response to iOS 16.5's release. You'll be able to set up Matter items using the Google Home app on an iPhone once the update is available. It is a significant advancement towards the interoperability that Apple and Google emphasized while creating Matter.
With the help of a new home panel, Google Pixel customers will soon be able to quickly modify their smart home. Next month, it will first appear on Pixel smartphones, but it might later spread to other Pixel gadgets as well. Changes can be made without even unlocking the device by activating the panel from the lock screen or the fast settings. It's especially helpful for the Pixel Tablet, which, when docked and in Hub Mode, allows users to view and operate devices with a single tap.
The Google Home app has been redesigned, which improves the user experience for watching Nest cameras in it. By tapping the Cameras Space, you can now view all of your home's camera feeds, and you can even pin specific feeds to the Favourites page. Vertical video history scrubbing, which allows you to quickly navigate through hours of film, might be the more helpful function. In addition, Google will tag the video based on any activity, automobiles, or other objects it spots in it.
Beginning in August, the functionalities will be available on the majority of Nest cameras at the same time as an updated Google Home app. The first-generation Nest cameras can, however, be added to the Google Home app starting in August for Public Preview users, with a wider deployment to follow.
