--TRANSCRIPT--
Thanks for stopping by, this is 2 minute classroom and today we are talking about the structure and function of the golgi apparatus, also known as the golgi body.

My goal with this channel is to help you get the answers you need quickly, so if you want to save time in your studies, consider subscribing and hitting the bell to get notified of new content.

The golgi apparatus is part of the endomembrane system and is the packaging and shipping center of the cell, you can think of it as the FedEx or post office of the cell.

It’s named after the Italian biologist Camillo Golgi, who understood the importance of a quality mustache. The Golgi apparatus has a distinct appearance that looks similar to a stack of pancakes.

These “pancakes” are called cisternae and each one has a slightly different function. Vesicles from the endoplasmic reticulum bring macromolecules to the golgi for processing. These vesicles will pass through the cisternae where their contents (mostly proteins and lipids) will be modified before being shipped off to their final destination.

Many of the macromolecules that pass through the golgi end up being secreted out of the cell or embedded in the cell membrane.

Watch this playlist to learn more about the cell or watch this one to learn about macromolecules, or you can watch this video of mine that YouTube recommends.

You should also check the description below for my favorite golgi apparatus video of all time, seriously, it’s amazing.

Thanks for watching and I’ll catch you next time.
