In this video I describe the Tuned Absorber Rig which has been created in-house at UTS Faculty of Engineering and IT in support of Teaching and Learning on the Dynamic Systems and Control stream of subjects within the School of Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering.

I describe the physical system including the beam, the counter-rotating masses - which are driven by a speed-controllable motor to provide an excitation force - and the detachable second mass which results in the conversion from a 1DoF to 2DoF system. I show the 1DoF system vibrating in its resonant frequency at approximately 19.5 Hz. I then release the mass, forming a 2DoF system and splitting the original frequency into two resonances, one at 15.7 Hz and the second at 26.7 Hz.

In the video, it should be noted that the camera frame-rate makes the masses appear to be moving slowly for the second 2DoF mode but this is a combined effect - and quite a nice one at that - of the frequency of the vibration and the 25 Hz camera frame rate; 1.7 Hz difference is the frequency at which the motion appears to be occurring but it is an "optical illusion". In future videos I will use a stroboscope to show the motion of the three modes more clearly and in close-up.

This video is made in support of Dynamics Lab based exercises on both Dynamic Systems and Control A (41058) and B (43018) subjects offered in the Faculty of Engineering and IT.
