Why Blackheads Are Black
Blackheads and whiteheads are called comedones. Open comedones are another phrase for blackheads and closed comedones for whiteheads. Open comedones are exposed to the air, which causes the contents to oxidize (mostly the lipid and melanin), which makes them turn black.
