Often described as Hong Kong's answer to Gone With The Wind, The Blue And The Black is a two-part epic set during the tumultuous years of World War II. Possibly the highest budgeted motion picture of its time, it masterfully weaves several intertwining and intense personal dramas while not neglecting the larger context of the wartime battles against the Japanese invaders. At its center is the nightclub singer played by the magnificent Linda Lin Dai in one of her most poignant roles, all the more memorable in that the movie was still in production at the time of her suicide at age 29. The Blue And The Black was a huge critical and popular success, named Best Picture at the Asia Film Festival in 1966. Linda is surrounded by an all-star cast, including leading men Kwan Shan and Chin Han, with a particularly memorable performance by screen newcomer Angela Yu Chien, who was named Best Supporting Actress. Part I of The Blue And The Black ends in a literal cliffhanger, with the drama continuing in the equally memorable Part II.
