In this Author Insight video, Mohd Fadzil Faisae Ab. Rashid presents key findings from the article, “OPLANNER: A GUI-Driven Metaheuristic Tool Using the Tiki Taka Algorithm for Balanced Course Planning in Engineering Programs.” The article was published in the Journal of Applied Artificial Intelligence in Education (JAAIE), Vol. 2, No. 2.
This study introduces the Open-Registration Planning Network (OPLANNER), a graphical user interface (GUI)-driven optimization tool designed to support balanced academic course planning in engineering programs. The tool applies the Tiki Taka Algorithm (TTA), a sport-inspired metaheuristic algorithm, to address challenges in curriculum planning, particularly workload balance across semesters, prerequisite dependencies, credit-hour limits, and semester-specific course availability.
Using a case study of a 55-course mechanical engineering curriculum, the study demonstrates that OPLANNER can achieve balance efficiencies of up to 95%, showing its potential to improve workload distribution compared with traditional manual planning approaches. The system also provides default and customized planning modes, allowing users to input student information and subject preferences that dynamically adjust course difficulty weights.
This video offers a concise overview of the article and highlights the importance of intelligent, user-accessible optimization tools for supporting more equitable, efficient, and data-informed academic planning in engineering education.
