When is Eid al-Adha this year, and what are the dates?
This year, Eid al-Adha falls on July 20th.
Three days are given for Eid al-Adha – July 20th, 21st, and 22nd. A hadith states:
A person should hasten to perform the obligatory Eid al-Adha. Performing Eid al-Adha on the first day promises a greater reward than performing Eid al-Adha on the second day, and performing Eid al-Adha on the second day promises a greater reward than performing Eid al-Adha on the third day! (Tirmidhi, 1521).
Tashriq Takbir. Beginning with the Fajr prayer on the 9th of Dhul-Hijjah (July 19th), which is known as the Day of Arafah, and continuing until the Asr prayer on the 4th day of Eid al-Adha, i.e., the 13th of this month (until July 22nd), Muslims should recite Takbir Tashriq after each obligatory prayer.
Why do we do it? What is its history and meaning?
The most important act on this day is the sacrifice—the slaughter of an animal for the pleasure of Allah, which is performed in memory of the sacrifice of our father, Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him).
Qurbani (sacrifice) was prescribed by Allah Ta'ala as one of the means of drawing closer to Him, and also so that believers would remember the unparalleled sacrifice of our father, Ibrahim (peace be upon him).
Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was given a child—a long-awaited son—at a very advanced age, and he was commanded to sacrifice this only son. Like other parents, Ibrahim (peace be upon him) longed to see his son alive and well. However, despite his deep love for his son, he was commanded to sacrifice his son. Ibrahim (peace be upon him) never wavered in his resolve to obey Allah's command, not his own desires.
Allah, the Most High, described the sacrifice of a father and son in the Quran in the following words:
102. And when he [Ismail] reached the age of being able to walk and work alongside him, he [the Prophet Ibrahim] said to him: "O my son! Indeed, I see in a dream (revelation) that I am slaughtering you, so see what you think." He [Ismail] said (in order to please his Lord and to help his father fulfill his duty to Allah): "O my father! Do what you are commanded (by Allah); (and) you will find me, if Allah wills, from (among) the patient."
103. And when they both [the Prophet Ibrahim and his son Ishmael] submitted (to Allah) and (then Ibrahim) laid him [his son] on his forehead (to sacrifice him),
104. And (at that moment) We called to him (in that difficult moment for him, when he had already touched the knife to his son's neck): "O Ibrahim, (stop)!
105. You have already (fulfilled what you were commanded) and (already in reality) have seen the truth of the dream." (And Allah the Most High gave him a ram, which he sacrificed to Allah.) Indeed, thus do We reward the sincerely virtuous!
106. Indeed, this [sacrifice of one's own son] is a clear test.
(Quran, Surah 37: verses 102-106)
What is the true meaning of Qurbani, and what should this act teach us?
Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was commanded to sacrifice his young son Ismail (peace be upon him). He wholeheartedly obeyed Allah's command and passed the test with honor. We should follow the example of Ibrahim (peace be upon him) – when faced with a choice between our desires and Allah's command, we should sacrifice our passions and whims. Just as Ibrahim (peace be upon him) obeyed Allah at every moment of his life, and it never occurred to him to disobey His commands, even for a moment, so too must we obey Allah's every command.
The Best Deed on the Day of Qurbani
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
"On the tenth day of Dhul-Hijjah (the day of Qurbani), there is no deed more beloved and dear to Allah that the children of Adam can perform than Qurbani (animal sacrifice). The sacrificed animal will appear on the Day of Judgment with its horns, hair, and hooves. The sacrifice reaches Allah before the animal's blood falls to the ground. Therefore, offer the sacrifice with an open and pure heart" (Tirmidhi, 1493).
Serious Warnings for Those Who Neglect the Obligation of Qurbani
Every believer is promised a great reward for performing Qurbani (as reported in the hadith), but there are also serious warnings for neglecting this act (for those for whom it is obligatory). If a person is obligated to sacrifice Qurbani but neglects to perform it, he becomes a sinner before Allah Ta'ala.
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
"Whoever is able to offer a sacrifice on Eid but chooses not to do so (despite it becoming wajib for him), let him not approach us (places of worship) on the day of Eid" (i.e., such a person should not celebrate this joyous occasion with other believers) (At-Targhib wa al-Tarhib, 1667).
