The Jamapa River crosses the state of Veracruz from west to east. Its waters originate from the last remaining glacier on the planet, located at 19° north latitude. The most pessimistic projections indicate that the Jamapa Glacier will cease to exist as such for more than ten years.
Tania Ximena documents moments in the lives of Guillermo Ontiveros, a glaciologist; Fernando Velázquez, who lives on the riverbank in the town of Jamapa; and Carmen Toca, a retiree who left Mexico City for the Gulf Coast. Images recorded along the glacier's descent from ice to brine accompany each of these figures in their respective territories. Through the portraits of Guillermo, Fernando, and Carmen, the portrait of the river itself emerges.
