What do sunflowers have to do with nuclear disasters? Sunflowers are the international symbol for nuclear disarmament — and there's a scientific reason for that! After the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, sunflowers were planted to extract radioactive isotopes from contaminated soil and water through a process called phytoremediation.
