Most Scandinavians live an uncomplicated, laid-back lifestyle, striving for a harmonious balance between work and leisure, and between career and family. Nature is always present here, or at least close at hand, whether you live in a city or in the countryside. This northern corner of Europe is generally calm and peaceful, though largely thanks to modern technology, we don’t live isolated from the rest of the world and are not unaffected by international developments.
I believe that this lifestyle has an influence on all fields of Scandinavian design, including architecture, industrial design and fashion design. We prefer simplicity and clean lines. We tend to choose functionality over rich ornamentation, and minimalist pale tones over a profusion of intense colors. Our natural surroundings are rich, diverse and in a constant state of change. The abundance of daylight during the summer and the all-embracing darkness of the winter create a backdrop from where designers draw inspiration for their individual style.
