Welcome to the 8th instalment of the beginner training series. Today's video is about the use of gears and more importantly, how to change gears in a manual car.
By the end of this video, you should be better at controlling the gear stick, move in between gears more slowly, identify when to change gear more and much more!
Here are some time stamps that should help you navigate you better through each sub-topic of use of gears:
When learning to drive it is really important to be able to use the gears properly when learning to drive a manual car. Many learner drivers may struggle with the gears, when to change gear and how to change gear in a manual car. Manual transmission cars are more popular in the UK than automatic transmission cars. When it comes to changing gears, and changing up a gear, it is vital to understand how the gearbox works with the engine, why we have different gears, and when to change gear to get the best use out of the gearbox.
There are lots of 'technical' explainer videos on YouTube, however, if you are not into the cars, this sort of information may be a little too much to take in. In this video, we have tried to simplify the use of gears, and how the gears work. If the learner driver understands the basics of how to change gear and when to change gear, then they would be in a better position to be able to learn the use of gears quicker.
When watching this video, it would be a great idea to take some notes, this will help you when it comes to your on-road driving lessons. You can talk with your driving instructor about the various gear types, and how their car performs at different gear and speed ratios. Every car is different. The example given in the video is based upon a typical small engine 1.4 engine car, 1.6 engine car. Please be sure to leave some feedback at the end of the video!
