When choosing tile adhesive, it's enough to rely on four main criteria.
1. Tile type. This could be ceramic, porcelain, clinker, etc.
2. Size of the tile being laid. Some adhesives have limitations. For example, a certain adhesive can only be used for tiles up to 60 x 60 cm. And so on.
3. Operating temperature. The room where the tiles will be installed may be freezing, heated, or even outdoors.
Two more factors should be considered: whether the tiles will be laid over underfloor heating and whether they will be used in high-temperature environments, such as stoves and fireplaces.
And fourth, the humidity of the room. For example, the same floor in the hallway, bathroom, or steam room has completely different humidity levels. Some are always dry, while others are constantly damp. Therefore, the adhesive must be suitable for the conditions.
I need to lay a small section of flooring in the dressing room. The floor is not warm, and the sauna itself is a separate building and will only be heated by a wood-burning stove on days when someone wants to bathe in it. It won't be heated constantly, so it will likely freeze in the winter. But this depends on the frost and how often the sauna itself is heated. But we'll assume the worst-case scenario.
Now let's choose an adhesive. I most often use Eunice adhesives, and I'll be using this brand as an example. They have many different types. If you go to the website, you can find as many as 15 mixtures.
Now let's review what I needed by writing down the criteria. My tiles are porcelain stoneware;
They're 30x30 cm in size;
The room is freezing, and there's no underfloor heating;
And the humidity, I'd say, is at its highest, even though this is a dressing room and there won't be any direct contact with water. You can only consider the humidity of the air itself, which will be high due to the lack of constant heating.
Now let's look at the specifications of all the adhesives on the website. I recommend you go through all the mixtures and write down all the suitable ones before heading to the stores. This is necessary so that if you don't have one type, you can buy another. In my case, this was the case. I was laying tiles in a village 10 km from the district center, where there were at least some hardware stores. The selection was certainly limited, but what's encouraging is that, taking Yunis as an example, I saw bags of these mixtures in almost every store, even though it was a small village. Naturally, the selection didn't cover all 15 types, but I still found what I needed.
By the way, if sales assistants try to sell you an adhesive you're unfamiliar with, with confidence and kindness in their eyes, don't take their word for it – be sure to read all the information on the bag itself. Half the time, when I sent clients to buy adhesive, and they were recommended something much better, according to the salesperson, it was completely unsuitable for the renovation project. So, be careful with this!
So, I found the right adhesive at the very first store. And it was Unis 2000. As I already mentioned, a list shouldn't contain just one item. I bought one bag, and in this case, it was quite enough for me, since the volume was small, and I prepared the screed exactly level, although some types of adhesive allow for some leveling with the mixture itself.
