In build-up, the team looks to take on a 2-3-2-3 or 2-3-4-1 shape. This will depend on when the wingers drop deeper or go higher to attack more. The main aim with this is to play the ball to one of the two CBs who will then look to play the ball into the middle to the 6 or out wide to the wingback.
If the 6 gets the ball his aim is to either go forward to one of the two 8s in front of him or out wide to the wingback as those 4 players are the main ball progressors. If the ball is play wide to the wingback they will look to drive forward right away before looking for a 1-2 or to pass inside to one of the 8s.
In the pitch's attacking half, the team will adjust its shape to look like a 2-1-4-3. The CBs will sit around midfield and push slightly wider with the HB sitting in the middle between them and the 2 CMs. The CMs will look to sit around the edge of the box waiting to make later runs or be there to recycle possession or even take shots.
The wingbacks and the wingers will both be out wide but with the wingers tucked more inside. This will allow for overloads in those wide areas where the goal will be for either the wingbacks to get to the line and cross or have the winger drive at players and opt to either shoot or cross to the striker sitting in the middle of the box or to a CM who is making a late run.
When it comes to defending the goal is to win the ball high and be hyper aggressive. We will be looking to press very high and be very aggressive in the tackle as well. The goal is to have the striker press one of the 2 CBs forcing the ball wide where the out winger can press the fullback. We then have our CM covering their 6, our 6 covering their 10 and our wingback covering their winger.
This is very risky but the idea is to force long balls over the top of us or encourage them to go backward where we can press them even further and put more pressure on them forcing a turnover deep in their own half.
