Music Theory: Scale Degree Names
Welcome to a new series of videos in which Dr. Watson explains various music theory concepts.
In this fifth tutorial, Dr. W explains the concept of scale degree names: tonic, supertonic, mediant, submediant, subdominant, dominant, submediant, and leading tone (as well as subtonic in the minor mode). Each name alludes to the function the chord serves in a key. Also discussed will be the quality of the triads built on the various scale degrees in both major and minor keys.
The first five videos in this larger series will cover fundamental topics every student of music theory should know cold: key signatures, building major & minor scales, intervals, building triads, and scale degree names (and their triads).
