[Synopsis]

In this video, I configure and run the Fuse emulator on Retroarch.

The ZX Spectrum was a educational budget oriented computer released in 1982 by Sinclair Research. Clive Sinclair wanted to develop an affordable micro computer for the masses in the U.K., and he wanted his computer to be used as a educational tool to teach children about computer literacy(programming).

The ZX Spectrum had many different variants, the first variant didn't come with any storage devices, like a tape drive or a floppy disk drive. As time went by, you had variants of the ZX Spectrum with more RAM, like 48 kb to 128 kbs, you also had models that had tape drives, and floppy drives. This enabled this platform to survive up to 1992, but by 1990 8 bit computers were obsolete.

The ZX Spectrum competed with platforms, like the Commodore 64/128, BBC Micro, and Amstrad CPC which were also sold in the United Kingdom at the time. In terms of hardware capability, the ZX Spectrum was similar to the C64, BBC Micro, Amstrad CPC, MSX/MSX2, NEC PC-8801, Atari 400/800, and Apple II. They all used the Zilog 80, or MOS 6502 processors, had BASIC, had about the same storage media capacities, audio, and graphics capabilities. Some had better audio and graphics processors, but for the most part they were pretty much belonged to the same 8 bit class of computers. In the 1980s, you had many different computer platforms, which were not compatible with each other. You couldn't use Apple II programs in a C64, or C64 programs in a ZX Spectrum, etc. It was a interesting time in computing history where you had a lot of choices, because there was no standardization in the personal computer industry at the time.

Many programs were written for the ZX Spectrum, and it was a very popular computer platform in the 1980s in the United Kingdom. Every region of the world had its own computer platform. In the USA, the Atari 400/800, Apple II, and C64 were popular 8 bit computer systems. In the U.K., the BBC Micro, ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, BBC Micro, and the Amstrad CPC were popular. In Japan, the MSX/MSX2, and NEC PC-8801 were popular 8 bit computer platforms. In other parts of the world, the MSX/MSX2 were popular 8 bit platforms, and so on and so forth. When it came to business computers, IBM and IBM compatible machines dominated in most regions of the world at the time.

There were many peripherals for the ZX Spectrum, like modems, joysticks, printers, floppy disk drives, tape drives, audio box, and mice. It could be used to connect to BBS(Bulletin Board System) with a modem, it was a place where people could post messages, send electronic mail, read about topics, etc. I used BBS on my Apple IIc back in the mid 1980s, and it was a way you could connect with people with your computer. We didn't have the internet back then, and it was kind of like a early form of internet. It was limited by bandwidth and reach. Some people used BBS to download pirated software. The personal computer allowed us to connect with other people outside of our local area, because the world was a much smaller place back then than it is now.

The ZX Spectrum was a early 8 bit computer, which was intended to be used for educational purposes, but it was used for all kinds of applications, like communications via modem, word processing, gaming, and people learned how to program and develop software on these early computers which contributed to the computer gaming industry in the future.
