How Black Masking Indians' Suits Are Made
Black Masking Indian suits are hand-sewn works of art created over the course of a year.
Across New Orleans neighborhoods, each tribe develops its own style, imagery, and tradition.
Every suit is constructed entirely by hand, featuring intricate beadwork, vibrant ostrich plumes, sequins, velvet, and rhinestones arranged into detailed, symbolic designs.
Inside the craftsmanship:
• Hundreds of thousands of beads sewn by hand
• Freehand designs illustrating historic or folkloric themes
• Materials that can weigh up to 150 pounds when complete
• A new suit created each year, worn only for select appearances
This labor-intensive process reflects pride, artistry, and generations of cultural tradition.
