Cobalt mining is plagued with ethical issues because of issues in the DRC, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Cobalt mining issues affecting the cobalt mining industry include human rights violations, child labor, and environmental damage. Because cobalt is essential for lithium ion batteries, a big change in cobalt sourcing is necessary.
Cobalt is used in battery cathodes, a very important part of the lithium ion battery. Three ways to fix the cobalt mining industry include mining cobalt in North America, lowering cobalt in batteries (next gen tesla batteries), and finding new cobalt sources like DeepGreen Metals is doing.
While cobalt mining issues are currently prevalent, companies like Jervois, First Cobalt, Tesla, and DeepGreen Metals will find ways to reduce the issues around cobalt.
