At Siemens’ Charlotte Advanced Technology Collaboration Hub (CATCH) in Charlotte, North Carolina, the company is solving difficult problems with advanced manufacturing techniques, chief of which is additive manufacturing. The topology optimized heat exchanger shown in this video is one example. It was created at the request of the Department of Energy as a way to capture heat from gas turbine exhaust and convert it back into energy, making use of a previously untapped energy source. Siemens designed, simulated, 3D printed and tested the device, before “releasing” the project back to the DOE.
