The Cisco hierarchical design model comprises three layers: the access layer, the distribution layer, and the core layer. Today, we'll begin by exploring the access layer, also known as the desktop layer. This layer connects end-users and devices such as PCs, printers, and wireless access points to the network, ensuring seamless network connectivity regardless of their location.

At the access layer, we have access switches that serve as the physical entities. They facilitate the delivery of packets to their intended destinations, connecting both to the distribution layer switches and the end devices. Access switches play a crucial role in network management, security services, and offer specific functions based on different network environments.

When selecting access layer switches for enterprises, several factors come into play. Consider port density to support a large number of end-users and devices. Port speed is another important consideration, with options like Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet depending on specific requirements. Security, scalability, simplified deployment and management, and cost should also be taken into account.

During your evaluation, prioritize simplicity, reliability, and security to ensure the best match for your business needs. Assess the number of users, future growth, and budget to make an informed decision.
