Enter Harvard chemist and biologist David R. Liu. Instead of breaking the genome, Liu engineered a more elegant solution by creating base editing and prime editing. Operating at the scale of individual atoms, a base editor acts like a pencil with an eraser, swapping a single DNA letter for another without severing the double helix. Meanwhile, prime editing operates exactly like a search-and-replace function on a computer word processor, capable of inserting, deleting, or swapping entire segments of genetic code with absolute precision.
