Smart devices can make our homes more automated and efficient, but we should all be aware of the dangers of connecting our things to the internet. It makes our homes more vulnerable to cyber attacks.
The Internet of Things (IoT) is when physical objects can exchange data or be operated through the internet or other networks. Most of us know these objects as smart devices, things we can connect to our WiFi networks to turn our homes into smart homes. These objects range from small accessories, such as basic motion sensors or color-changing lightbulbs, to household appliances like coffee machines or refrigerators – it can even extend to full-scale home security systems.
Keep in mind that any device connected to the internet can be hacked or compromised if a security vulnerability is discovered and exploited. And unfortunately, security and firmware updates can be hard to find and install for IoT devices. As a result, cybercriminals can take control over unsecured WiFi-enabled devices and use them for more sinister purposes. For example, hacked IoT devices have been found to play a major role in botnets (robot networks) used to mine cryptocurrency or organize denial of service (DDoS) attacks against targeted websites.
