why Ariel's story needs colour | a 1989 vs 2023 analysis
comparing the colour palettes and visual style of Disney’s 1989 animated The Little Mermaid (Jodi Benson) to the 2023 live action (Halle Bailey). I think one thing the remake is lacking is visually pleasing colours – especially under the sea. For some reason, the ocean is quite dark! Of course, it can’t (and shouldn’t) look exactly like the original – the remake has a realistic aesthetic after all. But I wish they blended photo-realism with surrealism to make it more creative, fantastical, and fit for a mermaid 🐚🫧🌊
