Digimon World is one of the strangest, most fascinating RPGs ever made, and that’s because at its core, it isn’t just an RPG but a virtual pet game wearing disguised as a PS1 adventure game.

This video takes a look at how Tamagotchis, Digital Monster V-Pets, care mechanics, time pressure, and player responsibility shaped the design of Digimon World (1999), creating a game that is equal parts nostalgic, punishing, and surprisingly emotional.

We explore how Bandai and WiZ evolved the Tamagotchi formula—originally marketed to teach kids ethical care—into the more competitive, battle-focused Digital Monster toy line, and how those ideas directly shaped the PS1 Digimon World’s hybrid genre, its mechanics, and even its emotional core.

If you found the video interesting or entertaining, please consider liking, commenting and subscribing as this will help push my video to more people!

Also if you disagree with anything, feel free to discuss in the comments (nicely obviously, it’s just a game at the end of the day).

I spent a dumb amount of time researching, writing and editing this one, so any engagement will help a tonne!

(Also if I sound different I've got a new mic and have edited my voice differently, hopefully better lol)
