Tutorial: how to do a clone effect 🎈
Tutorial: Cloning effect.
Can be done in any standard editor - DaVinci, Premiere, Final Cut, Capcut, etc. It can even be done on mobile capcut cause we've seen it before!
1. Set up your camera on a tripod and DO NOT move it.
2. Shoot all your clones and then shoot your clean plate. If you want to make the process of cloning easier, make sure none of your clones overlap. However, if you want a more interactive challenge, do whatever you want.
3. In your editor, put the clean plate on the bottom layer and your clone clip above it.
4. Sift through the clone clip footage and start cutting the clip into shorter sections of which clones you want. Layer the clone clips on top of each other and then sort the clone clips by proximity to the camera. The closer the clone is to the camera, the higher it should be in your layers. This will save you work since you only have to do detailed masking work on the clones on top of other clones.
5. Start removing the backgrounds for the clone layers. For clones that do not have a clone behind them, you can just use a rough polygon mask. However, for clones that do overlap you'll need to use a combination of magic masks and manual rotoscoping. Pay attention to shadows - accidentally cutting through or removing shadows can really ruin the illusion of the clones.
6. Once you're done masking, you can apply the same color grade to every layer OR export the footage first and re-import then apply the color grade. We did the second as we noticed some of the colour grading gets weird at the edges of the masks.
