Directed by Paulo Halm, author of the telenovelas Totalmente Demais and *Bom Sucesso*, the feature film *De Pai para Filho*, recently awarded at the first edition of the Paraty Film Festival, arrives in theaters this Thursday, August 8th.
The film is a drama with humor about the harsh reckoning between father and son, involving forgiveness, reconciliation, and the discovery of love. Starring Marco Ricca, Juan Paiva, and Miá Mello, the plot narrates an unusual reunion between father and son. Machado, a pop star from an 80s rock band, now a failure and forgotten, decides to kill himself. Upon learning of his father's death, José arrives late to the funeral and doesn't know what to do with his father's belongings, since they never had a good relationship over the years. In the apartment he inherited, José gets to know his father's world for the first time until Machado himself reappears seeking reconciliation.
From Father to Son has a strong musical component, starting with the character Machado, who was the keyboardist and leader of Capa Preta, a rock band that was successful in the 80s. The director and screenwriter Paulo Halm, along with Felipe Rodarte, composed the songs that are played and sung in the film. The piano is almost a character itself: the character Kat is a young virtuoso who was Machado's student; to play her, actress Valentina Vieira took piano lessons in preparation. She even plays in some parts, but was dubbed by professional pianists.
With screenings at the Veracruz World Film Festival in Mexico and the Petrópolis Film Festival, the film also features Thiago Fragoso, Pablo Sanábio, Charles Fricks, Xando Graça, Sergio Medeiros, Tati Vilella, Marcos França, Claudia Sardinha, and Fabrício Santiago in the cast. Produced by Canhota Filmes, with co-production by Globo Filmes, RioFilme and SECEC-RJ through resources from the Paulo Gustavo Law via a distribution support grant, From Father to Son will be distributed by ArtHouse and Filmes do Estação.
To talk more about the film, which premieres the week of Father's Day, we spoke with actors Juan Paiva, Marco Ricca and Miá Mello, who discussed preparation, teamwork, and expectations for the release.
