Ratchet & Clank is a platform video game series for PlayStation 2, PSP, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5, although there are also versions for mobile phones. It was created by Insomniac Games in 2000, with Ratchet & Clank for PlayStation 2 being the first title in the franchise.
The protagonists are Ratchet, a Lombax mechanic who loves action and adventure, and Clank, a small but intelligent robot that Ratchet carries on his back during his adventures. The player primarily controls Ratchet, while Clank is used directly less frequently. The general theme of the games involves the two traveling across various planets, helping others whenever possible, and collecting weapons and gadgets to progress and resolve the main conflict of each game.
Currently, 14 titles have been released: six for PlayStation 2 (two of which were also released for PSP), six for PlayStation 3, one for PlayStation 4, and one for PlayStation 5. There is also a compilation for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita titled The Ratchet & Clank Trilogy HD*, which includes the original PlayStation 2 trilogy optimized in high definition and with online support. Similarly, *Ratchet: Gladiator HD is available exclusively on PlayStation Network for PlayStation 3, a high-definition adaptation of the classic PlayStation 2 title.
At E3 2014 in Los Angeles, a reimagining of the first title, Ratchet & Clank (originally for PS2), was announced for the PlayStation 4.
Furthermore, there is also a digitally animated film based on the franchise, simply titled *Ratchet & Clank*, which tells a slightly modified version of the original game's story and premiered on April 23, 2016, in North America. The series currently boasts total sales of 26 million copies.
