In five separate states, five men left a body behind — and only two of them ever answered for it.
Dana Ireland. Linda O'Keefe. Carla Walker. Barbara Tucker. Esther Gonzalez. Five women. Five names that took decades to surface. One killer confessed on camera, tearfully, 46 years later. One was identified four days before he died. One had already been in the ground for a decade by the time DNA caught up to him. And three innocent men spent a combined lifetime in prison for a crime none of them committed.
Dana Ireland (Kapoho, HI, 1991): three men convicted, all innocent — DNA excluded them before the trials that convicted them anyway. The real suspect was identified in 2024. Four days after police sat down to question him, he was dead.
Linda O'Keefe (Corona del Mar, CA, 1973): an 11-year-old girl, a killer who built a second life under a new name — investigators gave the public his face, built from DNA, before they ever had his name.
Carla Walker (Fort Worth, TX, 1974): police had his name in their file on day one. He passed a polygraph. It took 46 years, a DNA lab, and a recorded confession to undo it. "I'm guilty."
Barbara Tucker (Gresham, OR, 1980): witnesses saw it happen and drove past. Her killer was a teenager who grew up, married, and had kids two miles from where he left her — until a piece of gum ended it.
Esther Gonzalez (Riverside County, CA, 1979): the man who called police to report her body, and the man who left it there, were the same person. He died in 2014, ten years before anyone learned his name.
Five cold cases. Two verdicts. Getting the name right isn't the same as getting justice.
