I have witnessed many elders aging, and as a caregiver to some of them, I noticed something profound.
Qur’an that is recited again and again slowly becomes memory. And that memory becomes a refuge—during moments of joy, sadness, fear, sickness, and long hospital stays.
Even when the body weakens and the mind feels uncertain about the unknown world of aging, many elders calm themselves through zikr and Qur’anic verses they have carried for years.
I experienced this myself during a health scare. Hifz helped me remember Allah not as harsh or distant, but as Merciful and near.
After retirement, many elders suddenly have too much time—but very little family presence. Loneliness becomes real. In this space, encouraging Qur’an is not just ibadah; it is protection. Its benefits are far greater than leaving the television on all day. This is my personal observation, and anyone can reflect on it themselves.
Aging is frightening for everyone. It becomes less so only when people are seen, heard, and empathized with. And when the Qur’an is read, a quiet closeness to the Creator settles the heart.
That is why, while our parents are still healthy, we should gently introduce hifz to them. Ideally with qualified teachers—but even learning tajwid together as a family has great value. Listening to one another, testing one another, reciting together.
Isn’t that a beautiful investment?
It keeps the heart connected, the brain active, the senses alive—even the mouth and breath engaged in remembrance.
