Bow drill with the V-notch underneath the drill-hole. So you drill through the hearth into the V-notch. This method is nothing new but it was a long time since I tryed it so I thought I give it a try.

The spindle and hearth was taken from a thicker pine branch growing vertical. The lower part of the branch contained fatwood that I used for the tinder bundle and the top part was used for the spindle and hearth.

The V-notch worked fine. I drilled two embers from the set pretty easy. I find the conventional V-notch a easier to carv.

I made a smal, simple basket for the fatwood scrapings so it became more manageable.

Spindle and hearth = Pine (Pinus sylvestris).
Handle = Fatwood.
Tinder bundle = Fatwood scapings.

Hope you enjoy.
