Tantum Ergo for SATB Choir by French composer Déodat de Séverac.
Déodat, other than an accomplished pianist, was also an organist. In many of his pieces we can hear influences of organ pieces. So we don’t have to wonder if he is also the author of the setting of this sacred text.
A question about more famous composers of the same time and sacred choral music is a big topic. We don’t have sacred pieces by major artists as Ravel or Debussy, for instance. Poulenc’s music has not the same language of Ravel’s or Debussy’s one. Satie’s one suits the man. André Caplet’s music maybe can tell us something, but he is sadly mostly forgotten as a composer (he is remembered for other works mainly, like transcriptions, arrangements ecc.).
Then we have Séverac and few others.
Performance by Schola Cantorum Oxford with Jeremy Summerly.
